Yarnbombing? Say what?

Yarn bombing, yarnbombing, yarnstorming, guerrilla knitting, or graffiti knitting is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted cloth rather than paint or chalk.

I came across this… phenomenon/coalition/graffiti artists/weekend knitting group strolling in town the other day.

It took a while to figure out what was going on. Apparently, Yarnbombing is thought to have originated in Texas, US where knitters trying to find a creative way to use their leftover and unfinished knitting projects. I get that. Now knitters are now beginning to cover ‘tag’ streets/places all around the world!

Check out some tagging from around the place here, here and here

I particularly liked how the following busts were tagged! I wonder how the models feel about their bust being tagged…

Former Prime Minister - John Howard

Former Prime Minister - Kevin Rudd

Are you a knitter? Will you be yarnbombing anytime soon?
